The lake is shallow—around thirty centimetres—and very saline. The pink comes from algae that produce red carotenoids as the brine concentrates; in high summer the pans look like something on another planet. People have worked salt here for more than a century, by hand, in the same shallow basins.
It is also one of the most important bird sites in Europe: over 300 species recorded, on the Via Pontica flyway between Europe and Africa. Flamingos have nested here since 2024. The dykes are walkable, the mud baths are a local institution, and the whole thing is fifteen minutes from the arena.
